Open Singapore Championship
1/8 On-Road
Report by: Sam Cheng
Date event : 02/07/2000
Racers present : 57

This time we had some overseas drivers from Malaysia and Japan which made this race even more exciting and challenging. We had a total of 57 drivers and 3 round of 7 mins heat with 4 Main Finals ie A, B, C and D.

The Sunday weather was kind on us as we had some showers in the early hours which we were worried that the race won't be able to carry on.

Just to share some experience with you; on Thursday at the track before the race day, we received news that some fast lap were done by Japanese HPI driver who done 18 seconds+.
Then came the race day and we had our usual race briefing before the race begin. Thereafter, the 1st Heat started, on Heat No. 3, one of our local top driver, Khamil driving a Mega/Vector Spec 2000 clocked a new heat record of 23 laps at 7:18:62 and then come Mr Hashimoto from HPI factory came in with another 23 laps at 7:16:01! Just before the end of the 1st Round of Heat, Sam did an even faster lap ie 23laps clocking at 7:12:37. The commentator was equally excited and when ahead to announce that the lap time did by Sam is a new heat record but was slower by 1 second which was done by Mr Micheal Salven during the last Asia Serpent Challenge Race held in Singapore!
After the total of 3 rounds of heats the resutls was stay put with Sam holding on his TQ timing. Sam with his RB/Vector did 23 laps in all the 3 rounds of heats but with a difference of 4 seconds between. At one of the heat, Mr Kitabe came very close to almost making his TQ possible but was unfortunate that a small mistake was made by him at the S-bend which allowed Sam to sneak passed him.

In the 45 mins A-Final, after the horn Sam took the lead from the pack with his RB/Vector and never look back and had continue to hold his lead to the end of the 45 mins final. Except with Mr Kitade who was on Sam's tail with 2 second's gap and Hashimoto 3rd with Khamil 4th. However, at the middle of the race disaster strike Mr kitade on his engine and broke his con-rod. And that allowed Khamil to finish and came in 2nd place.
