    INTRODUCTION

This was our second year traveling to the Great Lakes Challenge in Toledo, Ohio. The track is one of the nicest nitro on-road tracks in the U.S. , and I really enjoy the fast, technical layout a lot.
After breaking in our new C6 and Xenon engines at home, Rich Browne (my awesome mechanic and partner), Jim Adkins, Rick Davis, myself, and my girlfriend Sherry packed up our RB powered Kyosho Evolvas and headed out to Ohio feeling excited about the incredible potential of our new engines.

    QUALIFYING

After two days of practice, we had tested and tuned 5 different engines, and were VERY happy with all of them. The car setup was almost perfect from the start, and after only a few minor chassis changes, we were ready to hit the track for 5 rounds of qualifying. We participated in a new feature at the GLC – a review follows from Mike Meyers. Now, the toughest decision would be which one of awesome RB engines would be the right choice for this track that would be very tough on fuel mileage. Incredibly, we ended up running a C5 for two rounds, a C6 for one round, and a Xenon R for two rounds and we were one of only a handful of cars that made fuel mileage on every run! We used an RB conical manifold, and an RB 2013 pipe, along with Kyosho Red Box tires to make qualifying perfect for us as we TQ’ed every round and also improved our time every run. After two full days of qualifying, our Empire Racing, RB Powered, JR Racing controlled Kyosho Evolva was running flawlessly, and we would start Sunday’s main event from the #1 spot.

    THE RACE

Unfortunately for us, Sunday did not treat us as well as the rest of the week. We had a few issues in the warmup and almost missed the start of the race. Rich did a great job getting the car back on the track just in time for the start and away we went! The start was good for us, and over the first 15 minutes or so we built up about a half lap lead. All was not well though. In our haste to make the start, the engine was too rich, and not making full power. Then for some odd reason, the two speed stopped shifting, but we did not strip a gear…..strange indeed. With the engine too rich, it fouled a plug and flamed out about the same time we lost the two speed. After spending about 15 laps in the pit for repairs, our chances of winning were over and we finished up the race in eighth place. Not the finish we hoped for, but that’s why they call it racing!
We all had a fabulous time at the race and look forward to going back again next year.

Thank you again to all of our great sponsors: Kyosho, RB Concepts, JR Racing, and Spektrum.
