Does the backplate serve a mechanical function or is it simply a cover? I am wondering if it actually assists in maintaining position of the connecting rod on the crank. THanks

Mainly it is a cover to seal the engine and helps also to maintain the conrod in position, however it is preferable the conrod does not touch too much the backplate because the engine will then loose some of its performances.
