My 323 is leaking from the backplate and the fuel/oil is going into my pullstart assembly causing it not to retract all the way. When I am pulling on my pullstart to get the motor started, I can see bubbles appear in the pullstart cord eyelet. Help me out.

Is it stalling when you apply brakes i was wondering because i have this problem with stalling and was wondering could the back plate be the cause. It sounds like you will need another back plate its probably worn out

Nope, I have no stalling. My 323 rips, runs perfect. It's just that small problem with the backplate seeping.

40,000 RMP FAR exceeds the physical limitations of the bronze bushings used in the back-plates of starter-shaft-equipped nitro engines (pull start, EZ start, rotostart, etc.). The bushing wears, then it leaks which contaminates the roller clutch which leads to seizure.
There's a cheap solution: press out the original bronze bushing. Increase the bore size so you can press in two 12x6 ball bearings with a .001" interference fit. Use a shielded bearing on the inside to handle the heat and use a sealed bearing on the outside for better sealing. Bearings should cost about $5 for both at LHS. Make sure you use the exact center of the original bushing bore and make sure you press in the inner bearing such that the axial position of the starter shaft is as close to original as possible. I’d credit the man who originally posted this idea but I forgot his name. Send a msg if you have questions.

yes 6x12x4mm are the correct bearings. They do have bearings that will press right into the bore of the backplate, but they are a little small as far as im concerned.

Hi all I have PM'em mgarzoli for instruction on how to place bearing in my backplate and have not recieved a reply. Is ther anyone else here that can gine me a hand. I really want to get this don but dont want to mess anything up. I have almost a gallon through my TM and it runs great but there is some definate play between my backplate and the starter shaft. If someone cold just tell me what tools to use and a basic procedure I am sure I could do it.

Thanks
Phil

The original bushing in the backplate is Oillite. Not recommended for high RPM's.

Theres no other way to modify the backplate but to bore it out on a lathe. You can also drill the hole about .030 smaller and finish it off with a 12mm reamer. Either way, you need a lathe as a dremel is useless. Make sure the backplate isn't jumping once its chucked in (if your scratching your head while reading this, your better off having a pro do it for you).

I recently did one and sold it on Ebay. Took me 10 minutes. Also did my TZ backplate while I has at it.

ah man that was your I wanted that so badly and forgot to go back and bid on it. Would you consider doing another one. Sice you are in canada I assume it would be better for you to just buy a new one and do it for me. I would be eternally greatfull if you could do this for me. Let me know if you can and how much.

Thanks Alot
Phil

Actually, winning bidder is taking he's time to pay regardless of many emails sent. If he doesn't reply by end of this weekend, I can sell it to you directly.

Keep you posted.

Has this 6x12x4 MOD worked in the long run for anyone who tried this with 2 rubber sealed bearings on their 323 or 523 pullstart backplate ?
