Ever since I finished breaking in this engine (RB TM728) I have had nothing but problems trying to start it. I followed the break-in instructions in the manual to a T. Every day I am visiting my LHS to have some problem with the pull starter fixed. For a motor this expensive I at least expect to be able to start it.

My first problem was the fact that I would pull the starter out and it would not coil back in, so my dad took it into the LHS to get it fixed while I was at work.

The next day when I tried to start the engine the same problem occurred. So this time I took it into the LHS to see what it was that was causing this problem. This time it was some "small particles" that had been jamming up the starter shaft. After opening the engine up further he concluded that it was something left there from the factory as no damage had occurred to the rest of the engine. He cleaned everything up and fired it up on the table at the shop.

Again the next day I went to start my engine and this time the cord came out but did not turn the piston. It retracted back in and I tried again, it turned the piston once and pulled the rest of the way without turning the engine and this time it stayed pulled out.

Clearly there are some problems with the starter unit as there are several other posts on this board from people who are having similar problems. My question to RB is what can you do about it? I have had my engine for about 2 weeks so it should still be covered under warranty. I would like to know the best way to go about having this problem solved.

You should work with your hobby shop to resolve the problem that you are having, and if they are unable to figure it out, then they can contact their distributor for further action...

i went through my second pull start in 1 month. The motor is insane when it runs but when it does. Clearly their is a major problem with the pull start. I have several r/c cars and pull starts are always weak but this one is horrible.

I have a custom made rotostart adaptor for my .28 I'll let you know. I can't live without the rb

Any pictures of this custom rotostart? What did you use to make it?

My first pull start stripped the plastic hub mid break in because i was not loosening the plug as heard.

I now use my Starter box (XTM Mammoth allows for this)...so no need to buy a new pullstart...and i now still only loosen the plug a tiny bit...then tighten when it fires to life!

Just a 1/2 turn will do,,or maybe just a bit more. It Doesent take much. Just enough to drop the compression.

yes,, it makes it easier to turn over when there is less compression,,,you can also heat up the motor with a hairdryer or heat gun,,this will help also. This is what I use(heat gun). I dont loosen the glow plug,,I just warm the motor with the gun,,it also helps to alleviate some of the startup wear.

if you have tons of compression and flood it slightly from 1st prime of the engine of the day and you pull on the pull start with the glow plug tight what do you think is going to break? the pull start.. now if you loosen the glow plug 1/4-1/2 turn and pull what do you think is going to happen? the excess fuel, extra compression is going to seep out and allow it to turn over, preventing the weak link of the starting system.. aka pull start, from getting damaged..

yes heat gun is good.. unless your at the track with no electricity..

also LST if you get the electric start to work on it.. you will break the 1 way bearing cause it will not have a pull start..

also on your LST with the mach and stock start system.. you need to loosen the glow plug.. why.. same reason.. BUT th eelectric start unit breaks the gear inside it.. then unless ya got a drill with you kinda done racing for the day..
