Now to power I added a .010 shim to the RB's head & run Odonnells 30% nitro
thats what I found at the savage unleashed forum.

is that for real?

1) is shimming necessary?
2) do I need the 30% or is 25% enough?
Thanks
Florian

No shimming is needed when you use 25% nitro and with this you will already have plenty of power available.

thanks, thats what I wanted to hear!

30% will shorten its lifetime, right? or is there any reason not to do this mod to get more power out of it?

Thanks again
Florian

30% will give you more power and so will put more stress on the engine, however the lifespan does not have to be shorter, as long as the engine's carburetor setting is right and no dirt/dust is going through the engine you should be O.K.

as said now many times in this forum, add 0.1mm of head-shims.

Please read first through this forum and their topics before asking.

Why is this done?

More nitro, more explosion(also earlier) and this needs to be compensated, if not the early explosion inside the combustion chamber makes a detonation and damage.

This is just a part of the explantion, use the search option of this forum to find out more about this matter.

After using the search function I have come up with another question which I have been unable to find an awnser to as of yet.

I read that detonation is the combustion of the air fuel mixture before the piston reaches TDC (which I allready know is not good). As you said detonation could result if using 30% withought the extra 0.1mm head shim. However my next question is: If I where to run 30% and use a colder glow-plug, and still keep the stock 0.3mm shims would this solve the problem of detonation?

This indeed would be possible since the colder glowplug gives you a later explosion point, however I myself would not take the risk and just add an extra head-shim.
