I had an off the wall idea. it is winter now and its pretty cold between 20f-40f degrees. tomorrow is going to be around 35 and dry. i have a gallon of fuel finally and I'm going to break-in the 728. since you have to reach 200-210f during break-in, you need to be able to retain heat. some people wrap there cooling heads with foil or a sock. i was thinking of just taking the cooling head completely off and use some spacers in between the head button and the screws to keep the same space on the screws going into the head. what do you think about this? yes i know it will make the temps go up. this is what i am looking for. with the temps up i can run the enige richer than normal to keep tons of oil going through the engine. but my concern is will this make the engine run to hot even with a super rich setting? this does make sence to me. there are after market cooling heads that are huge to reduce heat in the summer. so in the winter why wouldnt they make a smaller head to keep temps up? now with this said, thats where my idea came from. well a smaller head , i thought would be ideal, then i went on to thinking, what about no head. thus is how I came to the conclusion of an engine with out a cooling head for winter running when super cold out.

I would not do this without a cooling-head, the most simple and cheap method is too cover the cooling-head. The other thing you could do is purchase a on-road cooling-head, this one is significantly smaller and will have the same effect.

i covered the cooling head with a sock. this worked great to keep the engine temps up. it was icey and a mix of snow today. i started at 4pm when it was 34 outside. temps dropped to about 20 by 7pm. i had run about 1/4 gallon through the engine by then. was kinda tricky with the needles. the humidity was up and down today. it was snowing then freezing rain. then nothing. then there was fog then it cleared up. and all this was going on while the temps where dropping out side. it was a tuning night mare. well i managed to keep temps between 200-230. most of the time though temps stayed between 200-215. needless to say i killed my new battery in the odonnells temp gun so every 20 seconds i had a temp on the engine. i am a little ocd about things. anyways i started at factory settings and as the day went on to keep the engine at 200 i ended up at 4 3/4 turns out on hsn and 6 1/2 turns out on lsn with the 1mm gap for idle. i put about 1/4 gallon through the engine today just on the bench to get some fuel through the engine and to monitor the temps really close. i never went over 1/2 of the engine rpm range. mostly stuck with 1/4 rpm. i did heat cycle the first 3 tanks though. ran for about 5-10 minutes each time shut engine off and returned piston to bdc. after the 3 heat cycles i just ran the engine for about 30 minutes but made sure temps where good at all times and rpms never went to high. when temps would drop i used the sock as well as needle adjustments and when temps went up i took the sock off and richened a touch. everything went really well and surprisingly wasn't that bad considering the weather threw me a few curve balls today. the engine did stall a few dozen times but fired right back up in 2-5 pulls each time. no biggy.

Be advised that with these weather conditions the increased humidity and very cold air is a problem for the carburetor settings.
Also after use I suggest you assure that there is no fuel and humidity leftover in the engine if you do not want to find oxidations inside your engine which can ruin your bearings.

after i shut then engine off i put a glow igniter on the plug and try to start the engine a few times. this burns out all the extra fuel. i do this with the fuel line off. i then use hobbico after run oil in the carb, 4drops and then 2 drops in the glow plug hole. pull about 10 times with glow plug out still. then put glow plug back in and pull 2 more times then return piston to bdc. and yes i noticed that it was very hard to get a right setting and even with the right temp the engine was always loading up on fuel. i was running the engine at 205 normally with raw fuel still coming out and the engine wouldn't clear out. every once in awhile i could get the engine to clear. i leaned about 1/8th turn and this aloud me to clean the engine out. but temps went up to 225 and i didn't feel comfortable with the temps being this high yet. since its only have about 1/3 gallon through it. but once i have alittle more fuel on this engine i will tune for right around 240. this should be the sweet spot.
