Is it neccassary or critical to runin with one if you follow the directions. is there any ideal temps for break in or just "very rich"?

Before and stil now I do not use a temp-gun to set the engines, however in some cases this can be usefull if you are not at all aware of what is a rich setting or not.
Nowadays many are using a temp-gun this because it gives an idea of what the engine is doing, however it is not very critical in my point of view to set the engine at the 1 degree precise.

thanks, that makes me feel better cause i dont have a temp gun n i know pretty much what an engines doing by sound n in some cases exaust. BUT im afraid to run it in tooo cold n lose compression.

Running the engine too cold should normally only be possible with a very rich setting and this means also more lubrification, so I would not worry to much about this.
