ENGINE TEMP SHOULD BE VIEWED AS A WINDOW.LEFT SIDE OF THE WINDOW IS LEAN,RIGHT SIDE RICH OR VISVERSA.FIRST WE MUST FIND THAT WINDOW.LISTEN TO THE ENGINE,WATCH THE SMOKE FROM THE STINGER.THERE IS A DEFINET CHANGE IN THE TONE OF THE ENGINE AS THE MIXTURE IS LEANED. THIS CHANGE IN TONE IS REALIZED AS THE ENGINE"BREAKS ON TO THE PIPE".AT THIS POINT YOU HAVE FOUND THE WINDOW.NOW TAKE A TEMP READING RUN A COUPLE MORE LAPS TO LET THINGS STABALIZE AND THEN TAKE ANOTHER READING.IF THE READINGS ARE WITHIN ACOUPLE OF DEGREES THEN YOU HAVE ESTABLISHED A BASE LINE IN YOUR CURRENT OPERATING CONDITIONS.(I.E. THE WEATHER)FROM THIS POINT WE ARE USUALLY NOT FAR FROM OBTAING MAXIMUM POWER.YOU WILL NOTICE THE ACCELERATION OF THE CAR BECOME MORE VIOLENT AND A DECREASE IN SMOKE OUT PUT FROM THE STINGER.AT THIS POINT ANY ADJUSTMENTS TO THE CARB MUST BE MADE IN SMALL INCREMENTS. LOOK AT THE FACE OF A CLOCK,AN HOUR OF ADJUSTMENT AT THIS POINT WOULD BE CONSIDERED LARGE,AN ADJUSTMENT MADE IN A MINUTE WOULD BE SMALL.THE BEST WAY I CAN THINK TO DESCRIBE MAX POWER WOULD BE A CRISP,A STRONG PULL FROM CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT TO THE END OF SECOND GEAR. CHECK YOUR TEMP NOW,RUN A COUPLE MORE LAPS THEN CHECK IT AGIAN.YOU NOW HAVE A PEAK POWER TEMP.THIS TEMP NUMBER IS ONLY GOOD IF THE WEATHER DOES NOT CHANGE. IF THE WEATHER DOES CHANGE ADJUSTMENT WILL BE NEEDED. IF WHILE MAKING ADJUSTMENTS AS DESCRIBED ABOVE WE PASS PEAK POWER AND CONTINE LEANING THE ENGINE OUR SMOKE WILL ALMOST DISAPEAR AND THE CAR WILL RUN FLAT. STOP!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE TO LEAN!!!!!RICHEN THE MIXTURE!!!! TYPICALLY I HAVE FOUND PEAK POWER BETWEEN 230~240 DEGREES F RACING ON LARGE TRACKS AND 225~235 DEGREES F ON SMALL TRACKS,125FT. STRAIGHTAWAY OR LESS.WHY SUCH A LONG REPLY,I CANT TELL YOU HOW MANY ENGINES I HAVE SEEN DESTROYED BECUASE THEY WERE TUNED BY TEMP. MUGEN DREW
