Hi Rody, Yesterday, i opened the backplate to check the condition of the crankshaft, i found the engine crankshaft is rusty. Why could it happened? i bought it on 19/3/2002 and only started it 7/4/2002. Its only few weeks old. Then, i use my finger to touch the rusty area and try to scrub off some of the rust, and i could see the yellow-brownish dots & patches. However, i could still see part of the crankshaft is still shining (but not as shining as shown in the RB website's photo).
However, i do the following after before storing my car:- 1. that there is no fuel left in the engine by running it till the last drop.
2. Then, i drop a few drops of 'After Run Oil' through the carb. and turn the flywheel.
3. But on few occasions, i didnt finish the fuel in the engine bacause i cant start the engine due to poor glow starter. So, the fuel left in the engine (but within 24 hours) before i started the engine the next time and finish the fuel.
4. Also on few occasions, i didt put the After Run Oil but the engine is emptied with fuel.
5. Never let water enter the carb.
So far, i only run about 20 tanks (75cc/tank) of tornado 16% fuel. And DID NOT use any other brand of fuel.
I am worried because this is still very new engine and i actually haven't race it at a proper track! Sam has gone to Seoul, Korea for a competition and only be back on 8/05/2002.
My questions are:-
1. Do i need to change the crankshaft? Or is there any way to get rid of the rust?
2. If the engine is dismantled and put back again, will the performance drop? and how about the lifespan?
3. What other brands of fuel can u recommend?
5. Do you think the rust will spread towards other area of the crankshaft?
6. What is the chances of saving my engine?
7. If i ignore the problem and keep running it. Will the rust develop towards the main bearing and cause the bearing to rust also? And when the bearing is affected, causing the crankshaft to shake and finally break the conrod or the crankcase?
Kindly reply as soon as u can.
Million thanks....Rody.

What happened to you is a combination with fuel and humidity which is what happens in your country, this can make this happen, that's why it is very important for you to listen to sam and do what he suggests you to do. If you leave fuel in the engine it is very likely for this to happen.
The rusting is not really a problem for the crankshaft but more for the bearings, so I suggest you do not use the engine and let sam take a look at it before you use it, only in this way your engine can be saved or not. If sam is not coming back immediately I suggest you put some mote after-run oil in the back of the engine and let it sit till sam or somebody else takes care to look at it and tell you what to do.

You should flush your engine with petro immediately after your last run. Tornado fuel is a high performance fuel for experts, but it will corrode your crankshaft and bearing if left in the engine in days. add 2-3% castor oil for more protection and lower temperature.

Hi Rody, Thanks for your advice. Just got the engine serviced by Hobbylink's expert. Infact, he said the brown-yellowish thingy on the crankshaft was NOT rust...according to him that was some kind of stubburn grease stains/ marks that looked like rust. Well, now the crankshaft is as good as new like the one shown in your RB website. Thank you for making such great product...Rody!
kirkbently: Thank you for your info...May i ask what type of fuel you are using? Thinking of getting some castor oil, can you tell me which type/ brand?
