Ok , ive decided I want an RB C12 to drop in my new NTC3, but im a bit confused about the relative power ratings and outputs of these engines. RB in their wisdom rate their engines by stars rather than HP figures, and so i am finding it difficult to compare them to other brand engines. To make matters worse they have such a wide range , all with different star ratings. How much different does 1 star on their system really make ? The thing is supply is a bit of a problem here , I have tracked a 1700-000123 down which has 2 stars ( see below for specs ) but I really wanted a 1700-000133 which has 3 stars but cant find one anywhere !
Will there be much difference between these two ?
Also does anybody know how they would compare with say an OS 15 CV-X ? as my buddy has just picked one of these up.

I know these engines are based on the Novarossi C12XP ( i think) which are rated at 1hp ( again i think ) but its the diversity and weird star power rating system which is throwing me.

Anybody help me out here ? [Confused]

Thanks

Are the Turbo plugs legal in the UK race organizations ?
In the U.S.A / ROAR will not allow Turbo plugs yet.

um, dont know. Not actually panning to race it at any sanctioned events at the moment, although might need to consider that for some time in the future though.
Do the turbo plugs really make that much difference then ? 1 * of difference , whatever that equates to ?

The way I understand it the Turbo plug seals better than the gasket type.
but there are no difference in H.P. output from what I've seen.
go to Nova Rossi .com and see the spec's there turbo Vs standard.
tubro crank are something else.
No offense to R/B just another view at the topic.

Good Luck

Hi there the star system is simple.
all the engines have enough power as they are all based on the same case and cylinders.
Here is the trick the ones with the 5 star rating has the most power you can get and they are usually ment for putting them in the competition cars such as the serpent impulse or the mugen pro.
The 2 or 3 star rated engines (usually the side exhaust) are ment as a replacement engine for the pullstart cars such as kyosho and tamiya´s.
so the engines you suggest are the best replacement engines for your car the 5 star ones may be too strong for it.
And really the turbohead gives a bit more power............Peet................ [Big Grin]

Powerpete,

Firstly, the Associated NItro TC3 does not come with an engine so I am not looking for a 'replacement engine' , it is a Pro spec car and im looking for an engine that will do it justice.

But you seem to be missing my point somewhat. Ok its basic stuff that a 5 star engine will be more powerful that a 2 or 3, but how do you quantify their star rating in the real world ?

is a 2 star engine more or less powerful than an HPI 15FE engine ???? Is it more or less powerful than an OS 15 CV-X with 0.68hp (claimed ) ??
Its Ok if you are comparing against other RB's but becomes va very grey area if you're not. I dont want to buy a 2 star engine only to find that guys with the above 2 engines are whooping me......that would just be a waste of money.

So its not as easy as you say to really evaluate the power of these engines compared to other brands.

Is a 2 star engine equivalent to a 0.5hp , 1.0hp , or a 1.4hp engine.....who knows ? Because i can't seem to find anybody who can even give me a very rough guide as to if a 17000-123 will give me the performance i need to HAVE FUN with my fellow racers and not get humiliated every week.

I was going to order a 123 tomorrow....but by what you say a 2 star is only equivalent to a stck kit motor....not really what i was after.

dont get me wrong the stock rb engines are the novarossi engines which give the serpent impulse a top speed of 85 Kph only they have a pull starter, the hpi engine you suggest is not at all fast the OS comes a bit near but the rb will be way out faster than both of them.
I didnt know the TC3 didnt came with a engine so the 123 will be the perfect engine for it.
Looks like you dont get the star system and the way i explained it when i ment replacement engine i ment tuning !!!! so to go faster than a kit engine, so the slowest 12 RB will always be faster than the stock hpi or tamiya or kyosho engines. and the stars go way up to 5 which will propell your car over 100 Kph !!! the only thing you need then is a starterbox. and something to wipe the drool of your friends faces [rol_smiley] [rol_smiley]

Hello Groove, i just hope you are right pete - i have just ordered an RB X12 #1700-000200 for my NTC3, it has a 5 start rating - so i should be expecting around 1bhp> i guess?

Though what groove is saying makes perfect sense, how can you compare anything that uses different rating schemas. Now i know Rb dont publish hp because there is no accepted across the board standard as of yet to calculate it.

just one Q plz - is there a gr8 deal of difference between the serpent cs version and the versoin above #1700-000200 with the rb cs?

I used the search - & now i can answer my own Q thanx - the only diff - is that the serpent cs can drop straight in - meaning its ideal for me as i wont have to cut it - im new to this and the idea of having to cut my 140 pounds engine gives me the willies.

just my 0.2 [rol_smiley] [rol_smiley] [rol_smiley] [rol_smiley]

the "200" will work great in the NTC3. I think you are under "HP"ing it a bit. I would put the 200/210 in the same class as MT12/0S12TR/SX12RE etc. Which all put out 1.1 to 1.2 HP.

If you haven't ordered it yet, get the "210" with the SG (serpent) shaft instead. Makes for a better fit in the NTC3.
