Went back out today to get the temps down on my S3. I had been running temps around 280. It was hot here today 95+. I ran 4 tanks through never really got temps down. Temps kept jumping up to 280. I was overheating as well went home frustrated again. Waited until outside temps went down went back out it was abot 82. reset settings to factory. ran engine temps were down needed to start leaning out. leaned lsn out 3 hours good take off with good smoke temps still down 205. Leaned hsn out 2 hours. Engine was making good power on some long runs. Temps were 230-260 and woud quickly fall back down.
The engine makes a good sound whhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii with an intermittent crackle like you would hear at idle.
Roddy is this the normal sound or should the wwhiiii be constant with no crackle on a good tune?
On a side note I used the spit test as well as my temp gun as a back up and I have to admit it was pretty accurate. When my temps were 280 and I spit on the top of the head instant evaporation. When temps were down around 240 spit would slowly evaporate or cook off about 5 secs. Temps down around 210 spit just sat there.

When you have the intermittet crackle when you accelerate then for me the engine is still a little too rich on the LSN.
Please note that the timing of the S3 is not made to reach high rpm's and if you try an obtain this you are then always very close to running the engine too hot.
What I am trying to say is that yu should not run this type of engine too lean on the HSN, better run it a little on the rich side, this means that on a long speed run you still need to hear the crackle at the end of the straight. and if you do this you will notice your engine temps stay decent.
Of course you need to find the sweet spot to have a good balance with all this and this always takes a little time, so be patient.

Like Rody says the S3 isnt made to rev out, I run an S3 L2G and it seems flat on the top end down the straight. Thats how they are and I go quicker with this motor than a WS7.

Thanks those are the answers I was looking for. Just trying to make sure my tuning was correct and the sound I was hearing was correct. You know tune by performance, smoke and sound. Temp gun is for checking for potential problems. Thanks she is running good and I like her performance I will lean lsn a little and richen hsn a little for a good comfotable balance. The temps were down on that run last night. I also noticed the temps were easier to control. Just a turn of the hsn and the temps would fall or rise unlike before. It was definately a matter of my lsn being to far off the mark.

Thanks

Just a little more follow up. I ran her again today and I don't know what happened. For some reason I could not get temps over 212. With the same performance as the night before. I did lean lsn a little more as Rody stated in reply about 2-3 hours. Outside temps were 82 a good rain storm was approaching so humidity had to be 100%. Kinda leaves me scratching my head though. I'm not complaining cause low temps are a good thing to a point. And yes just to double check my temp gun I spat on the heaad and nothing it just sat there looking at me. My trail of smoke was not what it used to be considerably less at take of but definately visible. I also did the pinch test rpms fell and engine died in about 5-6 seconds. If I'm correct I believe this means engine is still rich on the lsn. Anyway vast improvement over previous tunes. Thanks for your help and any suggestions are appreciated.

The sudden drop in temps with equal performance generally means the engine is now fully broken in, although I have never seen a 60+ degree drop in temps. Just remember with the S3 your not going to get great top end out of it. if your tuning it so that it sings real good down the straight your running it too lean.

cperlta,

I didnt understand it either I was dumb founded. I thought I would see a 20 degree drop and thats reasonable. However I did take it out again today just to make sure and it's true. It ran very nicely temps stayed 200-230. I was impressed and happy at the same time. The previous night temps were 82 w/ high humidity and a nice breeze a storm was coming. Today it was 85 and I got basically the same result. Maybe it is just breaking itself in but I'm at almost 2 gallons. I still can't turn it o

The best way to find out if it is fully broken in is to run the engine in the street and get the temps up around 220-230. Then bring the car in stop the engine and carefully remove the glow plug. You should be able to turn the engine over freely without feeling the piston sticking at the top. The fact that you can't turn the engine over by hand is most likely the compression rather than still having metal pinch, and the compression being that tight is a good thing.

I know this is butting in but may not come up again. These comments about the S3 not being high revving and that if you tune it to make good speed it's probably lean - when I buy my S5 does the S5 have the same design???

not really, it has more power and topend. it is a good engine. the s3 is more for beginner's, the s5 starts to get into more of a racing engine.

wes - that's good news. I am club racing and replacing a failing OS VG21 so I think I am making quite an upgrade. I've heard here that if you can afford it to step up from the S3 to the S5 so I think I made the right choice for racing as cheap as possible. Thanks!

bjr,

it's possible to do that but you need the S5's crankshaft and liner which is more $$$ than a new S5.

Stefan-
Thanks but I was meaning that I made a decision to replace my OS and buy the S5 instead of the S3 from the beginning. The upgrade is OS to RB [Big Grin]
